What would be the best pot and pans set to get for your average kitchen?
Brand is a personal choice, i like all-clad. But All-Clad can reall break the bank if you get a full set. About $1500. All you really need is an 8" skillet, a 12" skillet with a lid, a sauce pan with a lid and a 4qt stock pot with a lid. Make sure that what ever set you get is oven safe. I use a circulon 12" skillet with metal handels for a roasting pan. Its pretty much my all puropse pan.

Ultrex is very good. Mirro will hol dup pretty long for it's price, though I've found the pans are better than the pots. And I believe KitchenAid is starting to make cookware.

I have an old Revere Ware (copper bottom) set that I love.
I am also very fond of T-Fal, the non-stick line with the red circle in the center that tells you when the pan is pre-heated. I don't need the circle to tell me the pan is hot
) just like the quality.

Get yourself a cast iron skillet 12inch, and stainless steal skillets and pots. Also buy one small non stick pan, the cheap brand. The cast iron is affordable and gets better with use, it also adds iron to your diet. However a well seasoned skillet does have limitations. That is where the stainless steal pans come in handy. The small non stick is great for eggs.
