Buy a "set" with 5-7 pieces included. They should have the standard most useful sizes. I'd say one pot small like 4 cups would fit in, and one pot that holds about 1/2 gallon of liquid. Also maybe a "dutch oven" which is big enough to put a whole chicken into.
The frying pans – at least two, one 8-9 inches and one 5-6 inches across. Go for the non-stick for the frying pans.

I'd get the best you can afford, you will have them a long time.

Costco has a set of pots and pans for about $150. It is a great set to start out with and not too expensive. It is the kirkland signature sets. I've seen it rated great by consumers and I personally use it.
